Light Through the Archive
A documentary-led campaign for a city archive preserving fragile film and community records. Macro details of the projector, careful hands and pools of blue light make restoration feel immediate, while the story explains how old material is catalogued, digitised and returned to the public without becoming a dry institutional explainer.

The archive held decades of local film, but preservation is difficult to photograph. Much of the work happens in careful, repetitive gestures: checking an edge, cleaning a frame, entering a record, waiting for a scan. The story needed urgency without manufacturing drama around objects already carrying enough history.
We centred the film on a single damaged reel moving from storage to inspection, restoration and public access. That journey made the institution’s wider mission tangible.
Macro lenses found scratches, dust and handwritten labels; projector light turned those imperfections into atmosphere rather than defects. Interviews were recorded beside the workbench, where archivists could speak while handling familiar materials instead of delivering formal statements in an empty office.
The edit alternated between silence, mechanical rhythm and short bursts of restored footage. We resisted over-cleaning the sound or image, preserving enough texture for viewers to feel the distance each fragment had travelled.
The completed documentary gave the archive a public-facing story for exhibitions, funding conversations and education. More importantly, it showed preservation as an act of return: material once boxed and fading could be identified, protected and placed back in front of the community that made it.
